Get to know more about ASEAN Federation of Mining Associations

Our Background

The ASEAN Federation of Mining Associations (AFMA) was formed on 19 June 1984 as a result of the efforts, interest and cooperation amongst its four founding members, namely the Malaysian Chamber of Mines (MCOM), the Indonesian Mining Association (IMA), the Chamber of Mines of the Philippines (COMP) and the Mining Industry Council of Thailand (MICT), in their desire to advance the interests of the mineral resource sector of the ASEAN region.

The Constitution of AFMA was formally signed by the Presidents of the four founding members on 15th February 1985.

Administration

AFMA is a private non-stock and non-profit organisation with its address located in the home country of the President and Secretary General. The principal officers of AFMA are the President, Vice President and Secretary General appointed by the Executive Council. The positions of AFMA President and Secretary General are rotated amongst its constituent members every two years.

MCOM officially took over as AFMA host Secretariat from IMA in January 2015 with the MCOM President, Dato’ Seri Mohd Ajib Anuar elected as President and MCOM Executive Director, Mr Muhamad Nor Muhamad elected as Secretary General. Administratively, they were supported by staff of the MCOM Secretariat.

At an AFMA Executive Council meeting held on 15 February 2023 via Zoom meeting platform hosted by MCOM, it was decided that MCOM should continue to host AFMA Secretariat until end 2023. Dato’ Seri Mohd Ajib Anuar and Mr Muhamad Nor Muhamad were re-elected as AFMA President and Secretary General, respectively. At this meeting, Mr Rachmat Makkasau, Chairman of IMA was elected as the new Vice President of AFMA for the year ending December 2023. The re-appointment of MCOM as AFMA host Secretariat and the re-election of its President and Executive Director as AFMA President and Secretary General, respectively meant that they have continued to helm AFMA for a record nine-year period.

As AFMA President, Dato’ Seri Ajib had endeavoured to enhance closer rapport, interaction and cooperation not only amongst the private sector players within ASEAN but also with officials of the public sector responsible for the development of the ASEAN mineral resource industry. This effort dovetails with the establishment, in January 2015, of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), a powerful economic and trading block serving the Southeast Asian market of some 600 million consumers with a large industrial base and a region well endowed with mineral resources.
